Sadly, "difficult times" are words often heard when it come to the dairy products industry. When a dairy farmer produce a litre of milk, it costs him 30p to 32, but he only receive 23.01p for each litre sold. Morrisons wanted to find a way to support farmers and came out with a new range, Milk for Farmers, announced last August and launched this autumn. For each litre sold, 10p goes directly to Arla farmers (Arla being the dairy cooperative from which Morrisons buys its milk). A Milk For Farmers Cheddar was later added to the range, with the same principle.
To provide extra-support to dairy farmers, Morrisons just announced that it is raising the "the retail price of its standard four pint fresh liquid milk to £1 and its Milk For Farmers to £1.23. Morrisons is also increasing the price it pays to dairy farmers on all of its own-brand fresh milk and Milk For Farmers." As Rick Bourne, Morrisons Dairy Director, explained: “We believe that customers are now ready to pay a little extra to support the dairy sector. Combined with the launch of Milk for Farmers range, which is now nearly three times more popular than Evian in our stores, we are doing our bit to support the dairy industry at this difficult time.”
