Dairy farmers have been strongly expressing their worry about lower milk selling prices lately, questioning large supermarket chains: farmers receive 23.01p for each litre, but it costs them 30p to 32p to produce. Morrisons is the first to react and announced last week the creation of a new milk brand to help dairy farmers. Morrisons Milk for Farmers will cost an extra 10p for each litre, compared to their usual milk brand: a Milk for Farmers four-pint bottle will cost £1.12 instead of 89p. Every single additional penny is directly donated to the dairy farmers, giving the choice to Morrisons customers to support them or not.
Morrisons initiative has been welcomed by the National Farmers Union (NFU), wishing for a growing awareness of their concerns. "We recognise that the current market for liquid milk is impacting on hardworking dairy farmers and their families" said Martyn Jones, Morrisons Corporate service director. "We want to reassure the industry that the retail price we charge for Morrisons milk reflects the highly competitive retail market. It is not linked to the price we pay our milk suppliers." Morrisons Milk for Farmers will be available for purchase this autumn.
