The new Poundstretcher store will be located in the Faustina Retail Park just off Buncrana Road in part of the site of the former B&Q store which closed in 2016. It had been hoped to open the new store before Christmas but this was delayed and Poundstretcher's property director Tim Shattock confirmed that the fit out of the Buncrana Road store would start on 15th January. He added that it would then open officially within the next four weeks. The new store is expected to create an assortment of new jobs including store management positions.
There has been no confirmation from Poundstretcher about the number of jobs that would need to be filled for the Buncrana Road store. A spokesman for Poundstretcher said prior to Christmas that job recruitment would not start until an official opening day had been set.
Following the fire that destroyed their Bishops Road shop, Poundstretcher announced that they would rebuild and that the company remain committed to have a presence in Derry. They have restated that Poundstretcher will move back into the Bishops Road site once rebuilding is complete but Tim Shattock stated that there are some issues that may take a further few months to resolve.
The new store in Buncrana Road has been viewed as an opportunity to quickly re-establish a Poundstretcher presence in Derry rather than wait to reopen one in Bishops Road.
Residents will be pleased at the prospect of two Poundstretchers opening in the city in 2018. Their products have proved to be extremely popular and the company launched a delivery service to Derry from its shop in Omagh in order to cater for demand while they had no actual stores open in Derry.
