A recent study has found that this population has soared to an impressive 3.5 million citizens within the United Kingdom (1). With so many health-conscious consumers, it only makes sense that major retailers are looking to cater to their unique requirements. One example of this shopping trend can be seen in the decisions made by health food provider Holland & Barrett.
Holland & Barrett is one of the largest suppliers of health foods within the European Union. However, they also fully recognise the growing population of vegans which needs to be catered to. It is for this reason that the chain is hoping to add as many as 500 new products to their vegan store (2). The sheer variety of plant-based food alternatives that have entered into the marketplace in recent times signifies that such a shift is not entirely surprising. However, the time frame in reference to its implementation is not yet abundantly clear.
It is also interesting to note that management has been taking a more proactive stance during the development of their product line. As opposed to choosing which brands and products to sell, any vegan food suppliers are being encouraged to contact Holland & Barrett directly.
The concept of a vegan store has existed for decades and yet, it is only recently that these centres have taken on a larger market share. There are two reasons behind such a trend:
Interestingly enough, millennial shoppers are not the only generation that is beginning to adopt a vegan (or vegetarian) lifestyle. As the number of consumers continues to rise, it is only logical that other major food suppliers will take actions similar to the Holland & Barrett chain. This is great news for anyone who is looking to gain easy access to their favourite foods and supplements. The future for vegans is beginning to look very bright.
