Gateshead is a city that is located in the UK near the cities of Tyne and Wear. It is a large urban town that is located on the bank of the Tyne River. Gateshead has seven bridges that join the city to Newcastle. One bridge is a known landmark called the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. The entire town is known for its unique architecture. One example is the Angel of the North a steel sculpture 66 feet tall with wings that are 177 feet across. It is located on a hill. The Sage Gateshead is a concert and music eduction center within a glass and steel building that is curved.

Coal mining was part of the economy as early as 1344. After 1573 coal shipments increased immensely from Newcastle to Gateshead while  the population doubled. Coal mining ended in 1680 due to ventilation and flooding in the mines. William Hawks a blacksmith developed iron mining in 1747 and manufacturing making anchors and chains. The city has a world wide business of wire drawing, and locomotive manufacturing. It is known today as one of the largest real estate developers because of  Team Valley who develops shopping malls to business parks with companies from all over the world.
