The masterplan, to regenerate an area of dilapidated buildings and the old Glasgow Harbour at an estimated overall cost of over one-billion pounds, involves 130 acres of brownfield site. Outline planning permission for phase one was granted in 2008, and the construction of 1100 apartments on the site of the demolished Meadowside Granary was completed at the end of that year.
Situated alongside the River Clyde, the 74 acre site is destined to become one of the company’s most impressive projects to date. The new plans, which cover over 350,000 square feet, include a mix of commercial offices, an upmarket shopping outlet, cafes, bars and restaurants, a cinema and casino, plus a 200 bed hotel. When the complex opens in 2021, it is expected to provide over 1500 new jobs, and generate an extra 45-million pounds for the economy.
Open space for city dwellers hasn’t been sacrificed for this futuristic shopping outlet either. The new plans include over 50 acres of dedicated parkland, picnic areas and cycle-ways; with an additional two miles of riverside walks to be enjoyed. With the Glasgow Science Centre, the Tall Ship, and the Riverside Museum all close by, and organised events and activities for all ages throughout the year, it is hoped the area will attract up to 5-million visitors annually.
Glasgow Harbour, and the new Glasgow Harbour Shopping Outlet, will also benefit from a proposed new cycle and pedestrian bridge over the Clyde. The style of bridge is currently being discussed with a global engineering consultancy, and expected to cross from Water Row, Govan, to Glasgow Harbour East, or the Riverside Museum. With new plans submitted it is expected work on the bridge will begin in 2019.
The Peel Group are not newcomers to investing in Scotland’s future. Over the last ten years they have been involved in the building of 3,500 new homes, and creating 5,500 new jobs across the country. With this latest investment in the Glasgow Harbour Lifestyle Outlet, their financial involvement in Scotland will top one-billion pounds.
